Creators
This faction is composed of dedicated inventors, craftspeople and artists. They are sometimes regarded as “weird” by mainstream society, but are very popular with fans and their own communities. The Creators met through conferences and shows and are united by their creative, independent spirit. Since the crisis began, they and their families have based themselves at the fortified mansion home of their leader, Cyborg.
Johnny “Cyborg” Sinclair Ariza
Cyborg was born in San Lazaro and raised in the upscale neighborhood of Atlantic Heights. His American father was an entrepreneur who made his fortune in the first-generation cybernetic implants of the 2030s. His mother was an accomplished Colombian sculptor who specialized in using rare woods. From his teenage years, Cyborg was fascinated by cybernetics and computers. At the University of Lazarus, he majored in cybertechnology and graduated top of his class at just 18 years old.
Now 19, he has always used his body as a canvas, installing the latest implants and devices alongside those he created himself using his father’s vast wealth. In the “cyberarts” world, he is admired for his striking audio-visual creations. He has implants in his face, head, neck, shoulders and arms. After an accident in his mother’s workshop, his left arm is entirely robotic from the elbow down. It has augmented strength and can shoot projectiles and smoke.
He has been a friend of Lucky’s since the two met at an art show when they were both 16, and their friendship has brought the Creators and Survivalists closer together since the outbreak.
Ernesto “Flyboy” Torres
Flyboy grew up in San Lazaro hearing stories from his grandparents about their lives growing up in the Philippines. His grandfather was a successful pool player who’d known all the old greats. Flyboy loved to hear these tales and, once he was old enough, he became a regular at the local pool hall. Even when he went to college, he kept playing, sometimes even gambling away his food money. One defeated opponent couldn’t pay up, so, instead, gave Flyboy his quadcopter drone. Flying the drone soon became his new obsession. After working in several related fields, he now writes A.I. programs for security drones and sets up surveillance and defence networks.
Age 33, Flyboy is average height, but a little pudgy due to all the time spent playing pool. He generally wears his slick pilot outfit, which includes a leather jacket and gloves. Implants in his hands allow him to control multiple drones simultaneously, while a holo-visor assists him when piloting. Flyboy is a good-natured person who can turn on the charm, and loves nothing more than a good bet. Since the beginning of the crisis, he has been searching for his missing boyfriend.
Saori “Hiko” Kinoshita (木下沙織)
Hiko is a second-generation Japanese-American who moved to San Lazaro to study at nearby Samford University. She was an outstanding student and completed a Ph.D. in the area of antigravity and hover technology. Hiko later moved on to a post-doctoral position, then a professorship at the University of Lazarus. In 2040 came a life-changing event: a terrible car accident that caused her to lose the ability to walk. Between 2040 and 2045, she focused solely on her research, and eventually published a paper that was very well received and allowed her to build the first antigrav hoverchair prototype. After successfully filing a patent (and winning numerous awards), she began production of the hoverchairs in 2048. The patent and the company have made her wealthy; Hiko funds more research into antigrav tech to help those with physical disabilities.
Now 44, Hiko is 5 feet tall and pretty. She typically wears fashionable and colorful clothing with an Asian twist. Friendly and cheerful, she loves to engage with people, especially about her hoverchair. The vehicle can move at extreme speeds if necessary and is equipped with top-of-the-line safety features. It also boasts a micro-entropic shield to protect the driver.
Sibel “Kuklacı” Bakkal
Born to Turkish parents in New Amsterdam, Kuklacı moved to San Lazaro in 2008 when her father got a job at a big tech company. After fulfilling the requirements for a B.A. in journalism, she had one credit left in order to graduate and was encouraged by her father to take a class titled "Programming Robots in Javascript.” Kuklacı enjoyed the course so much that programming hardware turned into a lifelong hobby and career. She eventually became a well-known personality in the world of programming robots by writing useful articles and publishing a lot of open source code.
Now 53, Kuklacı is 5’6’’ tall, elegant and attractive, with wavy dark hair. She loves to show off her cultural roots by wearing long Turkish dresses. In her left wrist, Kuklacı has a comms implant (with microphone and speakers behind her right ear). In her right wrist is an implant for a robotics toolkit and programming interface. She loves nothing more than to lock herself in her lab and tinker with her “pets” — a vast collection of robots.
Slate “Plate” Tate
Born and raised in the Midwest, Plate moved to San Lazaro after graduating from college with a degree in Materials Science and Engineering. He currently works at an advanced materials company and teaches in his spare time. Metalsmithing is his passion, and he can construct everything from miniature jewelry to weapons and armor.
Over several years, Plate has constructed his own his plate armor and greatsword, both of which he takes to maker fairs and cosplay conventions. The armor employs entropic field technology to form an invisible shield. The 5½-foot-long greatsword is constructed of titanium and vanadium. The vibrating edge can be used to cut through materials as strong as rock, while the flat of the blade can be used for stunning targets.
At 6’4’’ and rippling with muscle due to his love of working out, Plate is now 35. Handsome and charming, he is nonetheless loyal to his girlfriend of many years, Kelly. Beloved by his students, Plate is a caring person who will always help others if he can.
Zara “Threads” Barman
A fourth-generation Indian-American, Threads comes from a family that established a very successful tailoring business in San Lazaro in the 1970s. The young Threads spent much of her childhood learning the trade, before starting a biology course at SL State. She stayed on at the university and changed her focus, combining a lifetime of learning and her scientific studies to explore experimental fabrics. Now 27, her areas of expertise are camouflage, self-healing and flexible/protective materials. She has also been secretly working on a new outfit (nicknamed the “catsuit”) featuring the most useful technologies she’s been developing over the years for her thesis on nanotechnology.
Threads is 5’3” with long, black hair. She often wears the catsuit and is constantly adapting and improving it. The suit is equipped with patches of embedded technology and a nanotech “rope” that can be used against hostiles. The suit also has stealth and armor modes. Threads is very smart, blunt and opinionated. She loves discussing her work and cross-pollinating ideas from disparate disciplines. She also enjoys playing tabletop games and always attends San Lazaro’s annual game convention, LazCon.
